EU Innovate: How Citizens, Companies and Entrepreneurs are shaping a more Sustainable Europe

Those were two of the key questions behind the European funded research project EU InnovatE: Sustainable Lifestyles 2.0: End User Integration, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, which has gathered researchers, sociologists economists and sustainability experts from fourteen leading academic institutions and think tanks from all over Europe. The main goals of the project have been, on the one side: to make end users, companies and policy-makers aware of their active roles in sustainability innovation and entrepreneurship (by creating institutions, organizations and opportunities) within a European context; and, on the other: to demonstrate the scale of opportunity for entrepreneurs to create wealth, jobs and well-being within the context of Europe’s transition to sustainable lifestyles and green economy. El primer paso contra la pobreza

El poder de los pequeños gestos para lograr grandes cambios ha sido recompensado este año con el premio Princesa de Asturias de Ciencias Sociales. La profesora de economía Esther Duflo, del Instituto de Tecnología de Massachusetts, ha sido galardonada por su “contribución decisiva a la economía del desarrollo y al estudio de las políticas contra la pobreza”. Su investigación parte de preguntas sencillas como: ¿qué hace que los padres vacunen a sus hijos?, o ¿cómo podemos hacer más efectivo el uso de mosquiteras para camas?

From Stewardship to Power: Religious Organisations and their Investment Potentials.

Katinka C van Cranenburgh is visiting scholar at ESADE and secretary general of the International Interfaith Investment Group 3iG, which conducts research among religious organisations in partnership with business schools and universities.

Religious organisations’ core business is ethics. Therefore, one might expect that the investment portfolios of these organisations would not be in contradiction with their ethics. Unfortunately, practice is different from reality. Twentieth century research shows a secular-sacred divide between (secular) investments and (holy) missions. But with the rise of CSR things are changing. Recent research from the ESADE Institute for Social Innovation, in cooperation with 3iG, the International Interfaith Investment Group, and Audencia School of Management, shows that faith groups, rich and poor, can be a force for change in business. That is, if the religious are willing to utilise their power as investors.
