Unravelling the controversies of the collaborative economy

The collaborative economy has seen unprecedented and exponential growth over the last five years, disrupting traditional consumption, production, education and finance models on a global scale. These rapid changes have caused backlashes from traditional sectors that struggle to compete with the new players and are also being examined by governments, consumer associations and international institutions. The European Commission has undertaken a public consultation on the regulatory environment for software platforms, online intermediaries, data and cloud computing and the collaborative economy and will soon publish a series of guidelines for regulators. The UK government has also launched actions to deal with issues of trust and identity, insurance, digital inclusion and proposes a kite mark for responsible sharing.

Hoy vengo a contaros una historia de crecimiento exponencial que poco tiene que ver con las matemáticas, y es que recientemente he tenido el placer de poder participar en la elaboración de un informe para el programa Espai d’Inclusió 20+20+20, del distrito de Les Corts de Barcelona. Un programa constituido por una red de entidades de personas con discapacidad, entidades del tercer sector y empresas e instituciones de los barrios de Les Corts de Barcelona, con una misión común: trabajar para que la inclusión sea una realidad. From Stewardship to Power: Religious Organisations and their Investment Potentials.

Katinka C van Cranenburgh is visiting scholar at ESADE and secretary general of the International Interfaith Investment Group 3iG, which conducts research among religious organisations in partnership with business schools and universities.

Religious organisations’ core business is ethics. Therefore, one might expect that the investment portfolios of these organisations would not be in contradiction with their ethics. Unfortunately, practice is different from reality. Twentieth century research shows a secular-sacred divide between (secular) investments and (holy) missions. But with the rise of CSR things are changing. Recent research from the ESADE Institute for Social Innovation, in cooperation with 3iG, the International Interfaith Investment Group, and Audencia School of Management, shows that faith groups, rich and poor, can be a force for change in business. That is, if the religious are willing to utilise their power as investors.
